An Introduction to Green Mountain coffee

If you are a coffee fan (and who isn’t?), you may have heard of Green Mountain coffee.  You may have even tried it before without knowing what it was.  Green Mountain coffee for the uninitiated is a brand of coffee that has become more and more popular over the years with coffee drinkers across the world.  In this article, I will give you an introduction to Green Mountain coffee  - who they are, where they are from, what they grow, and what they sell.

Green Mountain Coffee: A Profile

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is a coffee manufacturer that is based out of Waterbury, Vermont.  This company was founded in 1981 and was originally a small café in Waitsfield, Vermont.  The delicious brand of coffee became popular with the locals and quickly spread from the surrounding cities to the surrounding states.  Now it is a famous coffee company that has become a household name.

Green Mountain Coffee: Additional Information

This coffee manufacturer owns a 90,000 square foot coffee manufacturing and distribution center, with other distribution centers across the region.  The company was voted number 1 by CRO magazine on a list of “100 Best Corporate Citizens” in 2006 and 2007.  For those investors and Wall Street wizards out there, Green Mountain Coffee

Roasters is traded under the ticker symbol of GMCR on the NASDAQ Global Select Market.  The company also purchased a maker of coffee brewers and sells a variety of single cup home coffee brewers for domestic as well as commercial use.

Green Mountain Coffee: What They Grow

Green Mountain Coffee is one of America’s leading organic coffee manufacturers.  Organic coffee – also known in some circles as green coffee – is coffee that is made without artificial chemicals or fertilizers of any kind.  It is also produced with eco-friendly harvesting techniques that do not harm the environment.  They agreed to sell Newman’s Own organic coffee in 2002 and regularly contribute to socially-responsible initiatives. The company even makes and distributes an all-natural hot beverage container made from paper that earned them a Sustainability Award from the Specialty Coffee Association of America in 2007.  They are also sell fair trade coffee, coffee that is determined to be produced from countries that use fair and free trade, labor, and agricultural policies.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters brews arabica coffee exclusively.  There are two main types of coffee: arabica and robusta.  The latter is considered hardier with a more-earthy taste, while the former is generally considered to be smoother and less acidic.  Most coffee that you find in the supermarket is of the robusta variety.  By contrast, most of the coffee that you find in upscale cafes, restaurants, and coffee specialty stores is arabica.  The company pushes a lot of coffee worldwide, too. In 2007 they sold over 13,500 tons of coffee (12,247 metric tonnes) – that’s over 27 million pounds (over 12,000,000 kilograms) of coffee!

In general, it is hard to find a coffee company that has been so successful at producing and selling coffee than Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.
