How to Decorate Your Room at a Very low budget
71Room Decorating
Your room is your fortress of solitude and the place where you retreat from the world to rest and relax, so one should always make sure that the look and feel of your room is exactly how you want it to be in terms of color, shape, and function. But decorating can be impractically expensive and interior design professionals will always trust their taste over yours, sometimes you’ll end up with expensive decorations and furniture that don’t suit your personality. But of course there are alternative methods that will get you a snazzy room customized by the very person that knows what you want down to the letter, yourself.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Decide on a central theme for your room to center on, spend an afternoon window shopping in furniture stores and browse through interior design magazines and the likes to get ideas on what you want the theme to be, take note of what certain products looks and styles are called and look them up on the net to find the lowest prices on the items you like. If you are eyeing some of the more high-end items, remember that there are probably inexpensive replicas available provided you do enough searching. The first step to getting what you want is getting to know what you want, so take your time and percolate on how you want your room to look.
2. Instead of buying a lot of paint to cover your whole room gets a little bit of one color that would create a calm contrast to the existing color in your room, get enough to paint just one wall or two walls that are parallel to each other. It will be enough to recreate the mood of your room and set the focus on certain fixtures and items near those walls. This also applies to decorative molding and window panes if want them to stand out and bring dimension to your room. The choice of colors you work with on your walls will also have a large impact on the overall mood and ambiance of your room, so it would be smart to give it some thought and even trying the colors on smaller surfaces first before you apply your paint.
3. Give your old furniture a chance; don’t be too hasty in getting rid of your old stuff. With a little bit of repairing, repainting, or modifying to match you’re theme they could still be perfect for you. This also works on knobs and pulls but if these aren’t too costly when you buy them at the right place, changing them is always the first choice if you have the budget since these are the practical fixtures of your room that you touch and pull and hold more often that the other things in your room they should function properly.
4. When shopping at rummage and junk sales for furniture look out for the items that don’t shake at the base and generally have good carpentry. Choose these over the ones that still have good paint and fabric but have bad physical integrity, remember you can repaint anything and even change the material to restore the items freshness.
5. Add more color to your room with colored translucent jars filled with small objects such as marbles, also large opaque jars or baskets can double as extra storage space for items that won’t look too sightly sitting around the room. Non-functioning pieces of electronics and novelty toys and alarm-clocks also make very good shelf items and surface fillers provided they are clean and shiny. These accessories give life to your room by accentuating a “beautiful mess” these effect can be further preserved and amplified by adding to your collection and changing arrangements every once in a while. If you don’t move these around too much they tend to gather dust and never get cleaned.
6. Furniture stores seldom sell the items they have on display at a considerably cheaper price because they have been exposed to people trying them out and are vulnerable to wear and tear, these are called “Floor Models” don’t be shy to ask the attendants about these. Used electronics and furniture doesn’t necessarily mean broken a little carpentry and electronics know how will really help with this but asking around for used stuff will get you the good items at very low prices.
7. Shop for old posters or if you already own some framing them with the right color frame does wonders. Keep in mind, art need not be expensive, you can even take old wallpaper and have it framed and it’ll look sublime provided you chose the right colors. For artworks that are more painterly and artsy-fartsy, if you have friends or relatives that took an art class or took up painting or sketching before, ask for their old works that they consider rejects that they just keep stowed somewhere gathering dust, the older the artwork the better the ambiance it provides, clean these up with a dry brush and frame them accordingly. These will do more than just fill bare walls; they also give your room an avant-garde vibe.
8. When it comes to window treatments, you can look for venetian blinds at junk sales or just look for broken ones to repair and paint, it may be a tedious task but it will look good and it will save you a lot of money. Of course you can always opt for fabrics, curtains are a very good solution for blocking light and even hiding large areas of damaged walls that would be costly to have fixed. Pick out curtains that are the color you want you can have the length altered and have tassels added by somebody or do it by yourself at a later time if you must. And remember that drapery and curtain rods are part of your room make them match the rest of the room with paint.
