How to Make Korker Hair Bows

Isn’t it lovely to look at little kids wearing cute and colorful korker bow? I’ve made a step by step procedure so that you can make you own for your little gals. Here’s how to do it:

Materials:

· Grosgrain Ribbon (desired size)

· Wooden Dowel Rods

· Small craft clothes pins

· Oven

· Cookie sheet

· Needle

· Thread

· Hot glue/gun

Making the Ribbons:

  1. Gather all the needed materials.
  2. Prepare the oven. Preheat by setting it at 275 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Obtain the dowel and attach the ribbon on the top part of the dowel using a clothespin.
  4. Encircle the ribbon unto the dowel until it is fully covered. The string must be rolled from top to bottom.
  5. Cut the excess ribbon on its ends. Secure then the ends with a clothespin again.
  6. Get your cookie sheet. Wrap every inch with aluminum foil. If you have no cookie sheet, a baking tin may be used. Arrange then the dowels properly on the cookie sheets.
  7. Repeat this procedure until the desired number of ribbons has been achieved.
  8. Once the oven has been preheated and the desired temperature has been reached, place carefully the cookie sheets. Do this cautiously because the oven is very hot. Leave it for around 25 minutes.
  9. After 25 minutes, remove from the oven. Make sure to use mittens in displacing the cookie sheet. Set it aside and let it cool for several minutes.
  10. Once its not too hot to handle, carefully remove the ribbons from the dowels one by one. Slowly do this procedure so as not to ruin the ribbons.

Making the Bow:

  1. Cut the ribbon according to your desired length. It is better to cut the ribbons in different sizes for a better effect. The more ribbon you use, the fuller it appears.
  2. Obtain a string and cut it measuring around 12 inches. Lay it then on a flat surface.
  3. Position the ribbons over the string. The string must be placed at the center of the ribbons.
  4. Tie the string around the ribbons and pull to tighten fully. Secure properly the string. Double the knot for extra strength. You may also use a hot glue to further hold the ribbons together.
  5. Assess the placements of the ribbons. Check if they have been lined up properly. Adjust the placement of the ribbons as needed. If you will be using a hot glue, the ribbons must be arranged properly before applying the hot glue because once the glue has been applied, it is difficult to adjust the position of each ribbon.
  6. Affix then this bundle of ribbons into a head band, barrette or alligator clip. There, you have now your own korker bow.
  7. You may then add additional decorations to further enhance your bow.

Special Considerations:

  • Cook the ribbons altogether to save time and energy cost.
  • See to it that 100% polyester ribbons are being used because other materials tend to catch fire if place in an oven or microwave.
  • Apply clear mail polish or fray check to keep the ends of the ribbon cuttings free from frays.
  • For better korker bow, cover the barrette used with the same or matching ribbon used for your korker bow.
  • Test the ribbon if its cooked before removing it completely from the dowel. You may do this by removing the end part of the ribbon, if it starts to curl then this signals that your ribbons are already cooked.

I love Korker bows! This is so much better than paying an arm and a leg for them at Gymboree. Thanks!
