How to Wear a Sarong

By

A sarong is a traditional Malayan fabric that is usually worn as a skirt by women and as a kilt by men. It most commonly appears as a tube or a length of fabric that is printed in the traditional batik of Indonesia. It is found mostly in Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and to a lesser extent, in Sri Lanka and northeast India. In those countries, it is still worn as casual home wear among both sexes. Sarongs are usually confused with another printed fabric called a pareo, a fabric that is a traditional garment of Pacific islanders.

Sarongs are popular nowadays as beachwear among women. It is the perfect casual wear. It can be very comfortable under a hot sun plus it is a very nice-looking body cover. But do you know that there are many ways to wear your sarong? It can be worn as a shawl, a head cover, a dress or even as a skirt. But one thing that is very appealing for women is that you can tie a sarong in many different ways. It can be worn almost identically as that of a pareo and in fact, these two are, in a fashion sense, almost interchangeable. So, here are some ways to wear your sarong.

The easiest way is the tie-front or the classy beach cover-up look. You just place the fabric behind you with the top edge of the fabric in alignment with the small of the back. Then, wrapping it tightly around your back, bring the edges to the front until they meet just below the navel. Then tie it with a square knot, or a double knot for extra security. You can spice the look up by rotating the knot to one hip. To get a sexier look, you can fold the sarong into a triangle first then tying the ends together at the side. Also, if you want to make your sarong into a miniskirt, you can fold it into half while letting the fringe hang at the bottom, and tie around the waist.

You can also wear your sarong as dress. Placing your sarong horizontally behind your back, bring the top edges to the front while wrapping your body tightly. You can then tie it just above your chest. You can wear this look as an evening wear or wear it over a swimsuit. You can also wear it as a halter dress. Place the fabric horizontally behind your back. Then take the top two ends and wrap it around your body. You can then cross the material just over your chest and then tie it behind your neck.

Sarongs are one of the most versatile materials there is. It is not only an item of clothing but can also be used as an object for everyday living. It can be used as a towel, as a picnic blanket, as a wall decoration, or even as a table cloth. With its design and practicality, it is no wonder that sarongs has become such a phenomenon today.
