Scented candles are perfect to create a relaxing environment in your home or in any place you want. One downside of using scented candles especially the strong scented ones is its costly price. If you do want to enjoy the aroma of scented candles without paying too heavy a price, this article will help you how to make scented candles in the comforts of your home.

Materials

Wax

This can be bought as paraffin in almost any craft store or in the supermarket.

Scent

This can also be bought from everywhere. The scent can be found in both liquid and solid form. If you want a longer lasting and stronger scent, you may opt for the liquid form.

Wick

Obviously, you can’t create a candle without the wick. If you want your candle to burn more intensely, buy thick wicks.

Color Chip

Make your candle more interesting by adding different colors to it.

Tools

Thermometer

Stove or any other Heat Source

Candle Mold

Double Boiler

Instructions

  1. You can use parchment paper or old newspapers to cover your work area. This will facilitate easier cleaning later.
  2. Cut wax into smaller pieces to make melting easier. Put wax into the first container. Then, place the container into a pan filled with water, thus creating a double boiler.
  3. Start the stove and place heat settings to medium heat. Bring the water into a gentle boil. By doing this, you can prevent water from splashing into the paraffin.
  4. Prepare the mold beforehand by making sure that is thoroughly clean and you follow the proper instructions for its use.
  5. As the wax melts, add the color chip to it. It is ideal to put a small amount of coloring into the molten wax first, so you can adjust the candle’s color shade. Remember that the color changes as the candle cools down, so you can check the final color of your candle by getting a sample amount and then letting it cool down.
  6. Add the scent when the wax temperature gets to 165F. You can experiment with your candles’ scent by mixing different scents. About a half teaspoon of your desired scent is enough. Stir the colored and scented wax very well.
  7. Place thermometer into the wax. If the temperature has now reached about 175F, it is now ready for pouring.
  8. To prevent water from getting into your mold, lift the wax container out of the water then wipe dry.
  9. Pour the molten wax into the mold carefully and fill it until you reach the desired height. This is called the first pour. There will be a second pour as the wax has a tendency to shrink as it cools.
  10. Wait for the first pouring to completely cool down. This usually takes about 3-4 hours. You will then observe a depression around the wick. After this, reheat the remaining wax in your container then pour it into the mold for your second pour.
  11. Wait for another 4 hours for the candle to completely cool down. You can now remove it from its mold.
  12. After this, cut the wick with a pair of scissors until about ¼ of an inch remains. You have now created your first scented candles.
