The Best Places for College Students to Work
76
It is important for college students to steer away from huge student loans as much as possible. While most of your concentration and focus should be on your studies, it wouldn’t hurt if you’re earning extra cash aside from your allowance. Aside from the money, you can also get that much needed experience that will most likely get handy if you apply for work after graduation. Companies will most likely hire a graduate with an internship experience on their chosen field than those who have not. Below are some of the best places to work when you're a college student.
Work as an Intern
If you really want to have a first hand experience on your chosen field, applying as an intern is a great way to start. Being an intern makes the transition from work to school not only easier but it will look good on your resume too. The downside here is few companies pay for an internship. But if money is not an issue and you really want to have that extra knowledge that you can’t get from school, then internship is an ideal fit for you. To start, you can inquire at nearby companies if they offer internship programs. While some of them don’t have that program, most of them can not resist an extra contributor.
Work in Retail Stores
This is good for college students who like dealing with people and satisfying a customer’s needs. Because this type of business is everywhere, there is a huge chance of you becoming hired. Also, most of these companies hire persons of different backgrounds to fit their needs so you will most likely find a job in one of them. The salary also is not bad and you will acquire marketing, merchandising and customer retention skills which can be used in your future career.
Cafes and Restaurants
This is the most common are where students, college and high school alike, work. Another related areas to work are bar and grills and restaurants and other hospitality industries. Students are gravitated on working towards these establishments because they offer flexible schedules as opposed to the other aforementioned choices. This is possible because these industries have varying shifts. The downsides in working for these companies, however, are the relatively small income you will get and the inconsistent payment. This is good, however, for students who have no previous work experience and those who have an extra time on their hands.
On the Campus
This can be one of the best places to work when you’re a college student. Working on campus means you don’t have to pay for that trip to work and can therefore save you some money. Most colleges and universities offer work-study programs, all information of which can be found in your college’s financial aid department or registrar. The areas where the student can possibly work are the campus coffee shop, library, bookstore and food court. One can also apply for an administrative position and if you are lucky, you could land a job that not only works with your schedule, but one that you could hold for the rest of your college years.

This is a great Hub with a lot of useful tips. I agree - probably the most valuable job to get while in college is an internship. I did 2 internships over the course of my college career and I can say from experience they are a great opportunity.
On-campus jobs are great too because often times they will give you free meal plans, partial tuition reimbursement, money for textbooks and other benefits.
Also - if you are a college student just looking to make some extra spending money it doesn't hurt to look for a job at a place where you do a lot of shopping - you can greatly benefit from the employee discount :)
I really like that you emphasised internships! They are so important today. I regret not completing an internship while I was in college. The info on working on campus was helpful too - though I think you missed one of the best on-campus job options, being an RA usually means free housing :)

Some great advice for students, what a better place than working with the public to learn many skills needed to be successful in later years.
