What are Bengal Cats
68
Bengal cats are a relatively new breed of cats that is a cross between the Asian Leopard Cat and a domestic cat. It was first bred in the USA during the 1950s. It got its name from the Asian Leopard Cat’s scientific name Felis bengalensis and has therefore no relation to the Bengal tiger. This breed was developed so pet owners could have the beauty and appearance of the Asian Leopard Cat while getting the temperament and gentle nature of a domestic cat.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Bengals are well-muscled, sleek and powerfully large cats. When it stands, its hind legs are slightly higher than its front. Adults can weigh from 7 to 20 pounds. They can also live up to 15 years. The head is rounded and large with large, oval eyes.
Reminiscent of its ancestors, the Bengal’s fur is fine and short. Its coat is also extremely thick and soft and its color occurs in different shades of brown, gold and white. Spots on its body can come in various shapes, colors and sizes. Solid spots occur most commonly and colors may range from black to shades of brown. Two-toned spots called rosettes are also fairly common and are highly prized among breeders. They may form a “marbled” look, meaning, the pattern may swirl horizontally. These spots are found in the back and sides while stripes are found in the legs and sometimes, neck. A Bengal cat is also famous for the “glitter” effect on its fur, as if each hair tip is covered with gold or pearl dust. No other cat breed can boast this kind of trait. A “mascara” or horizontal marking around the eyes is also a characteristic of the breed.
BEHAVIOR
Bengal cats are known for its playfulness and hyperactive behavior. It enjoys the companionship of other people, cats and other animals. Be careful though, because these cats can become jealous if it thinks another is getting more of your attention. Kittens, especially, are very hyperactive so precautions must be made to protect items on the house. They also must not be left alone for long periods because when get bored, they may tear at curtains and furniture. The cat is also very athletic and some are known to perform full somersaults when excited. Because of its ancestors, the Bengal cats are much known water lovers. They love bathtubs and are very playful around water. These cats are also known as good swimmers.
Bengal cats, especially the fourth generation and below it, are not known to display aggressive behavior. But because of its energetic character, it may accidentally scratch people while playing with them. This may be a concern around children but you can train the cats to not do things like that.
Because of the wild nature of the Asian Leopard Cat, Bengal cats should only be used as a family pet when it is at least four generations removed from its ancestor. You can ask the breeder for further information on this.
